Tennis Europe was established during a time of transition for the sport in the early 1970s. Despite Europe's status as a tennis powerhouse, the continent lacked a unified voice to represent its interests. This changed following the efforts of Joseph Dunkel and a series of meetings involving European tennis officials. These discussions led to the creation of a European Working Group in 1973, with representatives from major national associations collaborating to address challenges and promote the sport across all levels. By 1975, the groundwork for a European Tennis Association had been laid, and in 1976, the organization was formally recognized as a regional governing body by the International Lawn Tennis Federation. With its headquarters initially located in Basel, Switzerland, Tennis Europe quickly became instrumental in shaping professional and amateur tennis, fostering junior development, and advancing coaching standards across the continent.
